Advances in IHC Have Lead to Improved Diagnostic Sensitivity Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare and fast acting tumor where no helpful treatment is around despite the discovery of several likely molecular targets. The late stage of MPM diagnosis and the period of time that between exposures and diagnosis have made it hard to completely learn what risk factors do and the insuing molecular effects.

Many hospitals are beginning to see more people that have pleural mesothelioma. Because of this, pathologists studying the case are given a number of problems, that are divided into those encountered in finding the differences between cancer of the mesothelium and harmless changes and those discovered in separating malignant mesotheliomas from different types of e-cadherin and connective tissue tumours. Immunohistochemistry performs a major role in helping to make the diagnosis, however, it should be understood with due regard to the scientific setting and radiological characteristics, and with a knowledge of the wide morphological differences that exist in mesothelioma.

Malignant mesothelioma is a cancer affecting the serosal cavities, an anatomic area that is frequently affected by mets, largely from primary carcinomas of the lung, breast, and ovary. Progression in IHC have lead to improvement in diagnostic sensitivity and specificity in the differential diagnosis in both cytological and histological material. Lately, the authors group applied a high level of throughput technology to the identification of new markers that could help in telling the difference between mesothelioma from ovarian and peritoneal cancer, tumors with closely related histogenesis and antigenic profile. In addition to the improved medical devices obtainable for cancer of the serosa diagnosis, understanding the biology of malignant mesothelioma has been accumulating recently.
